STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION

Call for GIS/Mapping Posters

To encourage and award the contributions made by Tarleton students to the development of geographic information science (GIS) and other geospatial technology, the department of History, Sociology, Geography & GIS at Tarleton will hold a student GIS/mapping poster competition for an annual GIS Day event.

 

We encourage all undergraduate students at Tarleton to submit their GIS or cartography-related posters for a chance of winning cool prizes and showcase your work to Tarleton community as well as GIS professionals from the DFW metroplex!

Eligibility:

  • All competition participants must be current undergraduate students at Tarleton State University.

 

  • The material for your poster could be from a current or previous class project, a research project, a conference presentation, or an internship project related to geographic information science, remote sensing, spatial modeling, cartography, or other geospatial technologies.

Criteria:

  • The poster addresses an important topic and effectively uses GIS or other geospatial technologies to analyze data and communicate information about the topic.

  • The poster showcases excellence and innovation in developing methods of GIS to provide answers to geographic questions or suggest solutions to current events.

​

Poster Format:

​

  • The poster should include student’s name, the project title, abstract (a short summary about your work), introduction, objective, methods, results, discussion, and conclusions.

​

  • The poster should include at least one map. The map must be created by the participant using any GIS or remote-sensing software.

​

How to enter and win:

​

​

  • The best 5 selected students will be notified by emails by November 10, 2020.

​

  • The best 5 entries will be selected to present during the virtual GIS Day on November 18. Each selected student will have 10 minutes to showcase and present his or her poster over Zoom during the GIS Day event.

​

  • A panel of judges will select the top 2 presenters to award cool prizes after all 5 presentations in GIS day!

​

Guidance for evaluation and panel judging:

  • The poster idea and work must be original.

  • All maps in the poster should include all essential map components.

  • Submissions must make effective use of Geographic Information - appropriate use and portrayal of spatial data.

  • Submissions must demonstrate accuracy - grammar, spelling, text font and size, figures, tables.

  • Submissions must use effective design/layout - logical organization and visual flow of text and graphics.

  • Submissions should demonstrate effective communication - understandable and concise.
